Violinist Dale Barltrop returns to Bendigo alongside violist Hanna Wallace, cellist Luke Severn, double bassist Rowan Swarbrick, and pianist Laurence Matheson for a substantial program of Romantic chamber music.
Arensky’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 31 follows. Composed in 1894 and dedicated to the memory of Tchaikovsky, the work moves from a broad opening movement to a quicksilver Scherzo and a central Elegia of restrained intensity before a decisive finale.
Schubert’s Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667 “The Trout” completes the program. Scored for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass, the quintet is best known for its fourth movement variations on Schubert’s song Die Forelle. The addition of double bass gives the ensemble its distinctive texture.
This experienced group of chamber musicians brings this large-scale repertoire to the more intimate setting of The Capital.
