The Anticlinal Fold - Bendin' Jazz
22 August 2026
7:30 pm
Ticketed ($25)
Following a sold-out performance at the Castlemaine Jazz Festival, The Anticlinal Fold return to The Coolroom. The band are a leading voice in Goldfields Jazz since its inception in 2018. When asked about their name, they explained: “It is because we are trying to bend rock.” The Anticlinal Fold approach unbending traditions such as classical, country, roots and New Orleans Funk, shaping them into a new vision of contemporary jazz. A style that is virtuosic, free, tense and exciting.
The Anticlinal Fold was founded by composer and pianist Jem Challender, a past winner of the Australian Songwriters Competition and a grand finalist in the UK Songwriting Contest. Jem studied improvisation and piano at the AIM under George Golla and Dave McRae. Jem then moved to the UK, spending 15 years playing and touring around the UK. Jem returned to Castlemaine seven years ago with a determination to collaborate with local musicians.
Jo Huf - In 2024, the Anticlinal Fold welcomed an exceptional addition to their lineup: Jo Huf, a brilliant vocalist and guitarist from Castlemaine. She is a darling and passionate improviser, a swinging Jazz vocalist and an expert in Brazilian music.
For this gig the rhythm section is composed of Bendigo-based double bassist, Ben Gibbons - a virtuosic soloist, widely regarded as the finest double bassist in the region. In early 2023, Jem Challender and Ben Gibbons released this EP together. Arron Light is on drums. Arron’s work with the band Husky was nominated for an Aria.
We are pleased to let you know that we will bring somer special guests to this concert and these will be announced closer to the day.
